Mission

The mission of the Southwest Florida Public Works Academy is to provide our students with the highest quality Florida Certified courses in Public Works.

Courses

In order to register and take Signals or Signs and Markings classes you must first provide a copy of your Intermediate Maintenance of Traffic Certificate. The  IMSA exam will be given on the last day of class.  Photo ID’s  will be checked prior to testing.  Certificates will be mailed to all participants who successfully complete all of the class requirements. All classroom hours are from 8:00am to 5:00pm.

SIGNALS LEVEL I (**)

This is a three day course which has the Traffic Safety in the Work Area as a prerequisite.  The Course will review the following:  Introduction To Traffic Control Signals, Signal Justification and Study Requirements, Signal Operations Planning/Design, Traffic Signal Configuration Design, Introduction to Signal Systems Design, Fundamentals Of Signal Installation and Maintenance Of Traffic Signals.

SIGNALS LEVEL II (**)

This is a four (4) day course with prerequisites of Traffic Safety in the  Work  Area on and IMSA Level I Traffic Signal Technician Certification and two years experience.  The content areas are:  Traffic Signal Supports, Inside the Controller Cabinet, Traffic Signal Phasing, Vehicle Detection, Basic Signal Timing Concepts, Traffic Signal Preemption, Closed-Loop  Systems, Traffic Signal Inspection, The National Electrical Safety Code, Electronic Troubleshooting and Electro-mechanical.

SIGNS & MARKINGS LEVEL I (**)

This is a three day level one course which reviews the following areas: General Principles, Regulatory Signs, Warning Signs, Guide Signs, Pavement Markings, Object Markers, School Zones, Railroad Crossings and Bicycle Routes.  The pre-requisites for this class are Traffic Safety in the Work Area and one year experience.  The MUTCD & Part VI will be used in the class.

SIGNS & MARKINGS LEVEL II (**)

The educational content of this course will be:  Level I review, Tort Liability, Regulatory Sign Warrants, Warning Sign Placement, Guide Signs (route markers), Trailblazers, Pavement Marking Materials, and Reflectorization/Illumination.  The pre-requisites for this class are  Traffic Safety in the Work Area, Signs & Markings Level I  and two years experience. The MUTCD  & Part VI will be used in this class.

SIGNS & MARKINGS LEVEL III (**)

This is a two day course which requires a minimum of five years of verifiable traffic operations experience plus the following course material:

Successful completion of the Traffic Safety in the Work Area, IMSA Signs & Markings Level I & II.  Material for this course will come From MUTCD and the NCHRP Synthesis 157: Maintenance and

Management of Street and Highway Signs.

Retesting Information

Anyone wishing to challenge or retake an exam should contact Nancy Pickles @ (239) 334-3897 to make arrangements.  The cost of challenging an Exam is $150.00.  A retake must be done within one year of original test.  You cannot challenge Intermediate Work Zone Traffic Control, Flagging or Florida Work Zone Traffic Control. These classes are pre-requisites.

REGISTRATION INFORMATION

As of July 1, 2007 you will need to contact the Alison Evans at the University of Florida (352-392-2371 ext 298 ) to register for the following classes:

  • Intermediate Maintenance of Traffic

  • Intermediate Maintenance of Traffic Refresher

  • Pilot Escort classes

You will still need to register for the Signals and Signs and Markings classes through the Public Works Academy @ 239-334-3897
